Each Tuesday night during Lent (March 12-April 16, skipping March 26, at 7:30 p.m.), we'll gather for some teaching and discussion about the spiritual practices Christians have used for centuries; and then throughout the week, we'll give them a try. These evenings will be led by Dr. Jim Stump. A bit more detail: Many of us have a sense that there is a gap between what we are called to be and the reality of what we are. We’re not talking about salvation or earning God's favor, but rather the abundant life that is marked by the Fruit of the Spirit — where it is the natural thing for us to be loving and joyful and peaceful and patient and all the rest. The Christian tradition has a long history of spiritual practices that have been used as means of developing habits that are conducive to that abundant life. Scripture itself points us toward these in Paul's instructions, "train yourself to be godly" (1 Tim. 4:7) and "Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; we do it to get a crown that lasts forever" (1 Cor. 9:25). We do what? Go into strict training? What is Paul talking about? We'll explore this training together, not only in teaching and discussion, but also in trying out some of these practices each week.
